06022018 – Solcana Anniversary Day ‘O Fun

Happy 4th Anniversary to Solcana Wellness!! It has been a great 4 years.  My anniversary date is quickly approaching too. In 4 years Hannah has built not only a gym, but a huge community of people who are passionate about being “healthy” and supporting each other towards that end.  It has been fun to watch the gym grow and continue to be an amazing place where ALL are truly welcome!

The celebration included a set of 8 workouts completed on teams of 2 followed by lunch and a party!  The 8 workouts were:

  1. 1 Min Max Effort Burpees
  2. 400m Medicine Ball Carry
  3. Max Effort Strict Pullups or Arms Only Row
  4. Partner Carry
  5. Max Effort Back Squat
  6. Sack Race
  7. Snatch Ladder
  8. Max Effort Handstand or Weighted Plank Hold

My partner had to bail at the last minute, fortunately someone else was in the same situation so Daphne and I partnered up and hit it.  I think we each had to adjust our game plan, but we were able to come up with a workable plan pretty quickly.  We were a Gold division (scaled) team.

I did the Med Ball Carry, Arm Rowing, Sack Race and Snatch Ladder.  It was a cool morning with a chance of rain.  It was actually sprinkling during the med ball carry but stopped for the partner carry.  And was boring during the sack race so that got moved inside!

The 400m Med Ball Carry is pretty self-explanatory. Run down the alley and back with a 10# med ball anyway you can.  It felt really weird to only be able to run with one arm, so I switched arms halfway and got one of the fastest times for the day 1:28 (I also don’t think this is a true 400m.)

Next was the Arm Rowing.  This was the scaled version of strict pullups. It was a max effort arms only pulling on the rower for 30 seconds. It was for the most calories at a 5 on the damper.  I tied for 3rd with 9 calories.

The sack race was down and back in the gym.  No clue of the distance. I was either first or second in my mixed group heat and got  first in the grouping in 13.85 seconds.

The snatch ladder was the last event of the day. We got 4 lifts and we had 20 seconds to lift followed by 40 seconds of rest.  This meant it was important to start at the right weight.  When I looked in Wodify my max Snatch was 110, so I started at 65, did 75, 95, and finished at 115. It felt good all the way through and I wished I had one more attempt.  So I was quite pleased with a PR!  This also tied me for 2nd in the group.   It was a lot of fun to watch the snatches and several people got PR’s.

My partner had to leave early.  When our team name wasn’t announced for the 3rd place awards I figured we hadn’t won anything.  I was shocked when we got called for 2nd place!! I got a little plastic trophy!  My first CrossFit hardware!!

When I brought my trophy home Caleb was really proud of me and talked about it for like 20 minutes!

It was a lot of fun and throughout it was a fun competitive atmosphere.  Everyone cheering each athlete and celebrating accomplishments throughout.

05222018 – CrossFit

Welcome back! With being sick and tapering I had been gone for over two weeks. That felt like forever. With Saturday’s bike race I probably shouldn’t have gone today, but it felt good to be back at Solcana! I didn’t push anything crazy hard, but you know it is hard to go too easy. And it was good to do mobility before and after the workout. 

The warmup was a PVC clean and jerk complex with 100m runs in between. The lifting section was a clean complex every 90 seconds. The complex was an above the knee clean, a full clean, ending with a split jerk. Every other set was supposed to be heavier ending with the last two between 80-85%. I ended with 85#. I probably could have gone heavier, but it was challenging without being overly strenuous! 

The gym has been playing around with how the MetCon portion of the workout is scaled and written. To be more inclusive we have done away with Rx and Scaled and make and female weights or movements. The workouts have four options based on color. 

Today’s workout I did as a blue… 

It was a 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 rep scheme of the following triplet:

American Swing 35#

Goblet Squat

Pushups

As an example of the scaling the “hardest” version was 50# kettlebell and handstand pushups. 

I finished in 11:11 I think. The pushups were my limiting factor. I did the first 10 unbroken and struggled to get through the rest of them. The last several sets were 1 at a time! 

I’m sure I’ll be sore, but hopefully not too sore!

05022018 – CrossFit

I love WODs with running in them! Yes I do! Even if it is “just” a Buy In! Or three different buy ins! 

After an odd warm up that included Walking Deads and Squat Hops, we had a longish MetCon. The warmup actually included quite a few movements and took some time. 

The MetCon had 3 different 5 minute AMRAPs with a 5 minute break between each. So a total of 25 minutes on the clock. Each section includes a running Buy In and deadlifts and burpees. I did this all scaled. So…

First set was a 600m run with 12 deadlifts at 135# and 12 burpees.  The run was included in the time… so I think I completed 30 reps for this set.

After 5 minutes of chilling and swapping weights we did a 400m run followed by 9 deadlifts at 165# and 9 burpees. I think I completed 36 reps for this set. 

5 more wonderful minutes of rest and then a 200m run. Followed by 6 deadlifts at 195# and 6 burpees. This was a hard set and I actually had to break up the deadlifts! Ok, so I can’t really remember how many reps I completed in each set. I thought I got something like 30 again, but then my numbers don’t add up right. 

My total reps recorded was 95 with the scaled as written. The Deadlift weight was a strong limiting factor. I could have done the first set of Rx weights and a handful of the second set. But nothing in the third. So I didn’t do the lateral burpee over bar. 

04302018 – CrossFit

Our warmup this morning was a partner Medball tossing complex that included squats and lunges. Then we went into our squatting 

Today’s squat complex was 8×5 at 65%. So I hit it at 135#. With the “lighter” weights we were asked to focus more on from and breathing. The last few got quite heavy!

Today’s MetCon was 4x500m row with rest equal to the time worked. Our score was the slowest interval. I finished the first interval in 1:50. For the rest of them I pretty much kept the pace around 1:50 and did them all in exactly 1:50 except the last one which I did in 1:48. It wasn’t easy to maintain that pace over the 4 intervals, but it helped to have a goal of having the first one be the slowest. 

04262018 – CrossFit

I hadn’t realized we were in a “de-load” week at the gym but the 2 workouts I went to this week were a little easier! Today was an odd kettlebell warmup and a MetCon.

The warmup was “walking deads” with a kettlebell and bent presses with a kettlebell.  The bent presses were hard, but not in the weight sense but in technique. The idea was the kettlebell shouldn’t move as you move under it.  It felt really weird!

The MetCon was hard on the hamstrings!  It was 3 Rounds for Time of:

500 meter row

12 Deadlifts

21 Box Jumps

Rx was body weight.  I did it scaled plus as I did 185#’s on the deadlift and the box jumps at the Rx height of 24 inches.  We were told to make sure we were using our hamstrings on the row instead of our quads which some said was game changing! I’m not as convinced, but trust the coach. I did notice my quads weren’t as burnt from this style. My overall time was 16:42.
