I think I joined with everybody else out there in throwing off my sleep schedule to watch the Olympics &#8211; including an amazing marathon performance, lots of new world records, and some great examples of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/2008\/true-olympic-spirit\/\">true Olympic spirit<\/a>. Watching the Olympics raised the question in my mind, do I have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/2008\/can-you-be-an-olympian\/\">what it takes<\/a>?\u00a0 Despite adding on 4 more weeks of marathon training I doubt I&#8217;ll run anywhere close to a 2:06, at least not for the full distance anyways.\u00a0 Weeks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/2008\/marathon-training-week-9\/\">9<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/2008\/marathon-training-week-10\/\">10<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/2008\/marathon-training-week-11\/\">11<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/2008\/marathon-training-week-12\/\">12<\/a> are all in the bag.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve now run increased my longest run ever to about 21 miles and I&#8217;ve done the distance twice now!<\/p>\n<p>When I wasn&#8217;t busy increasing my long runs I threw in some races.\u00a0 I almost got a 10K PR while running the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/2008\/race-review-hennepin-lakes-classic-10k\/\">Hennepin Lakes Classic<\/a>.\u00a0 I managed to get a 15K PR two weeks later in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/2008\/race-review-mdra-15k\/\">MDRA 15K<\/a>.\u00a0 Two weeks and a 20 miler later I set a new PR in the half-marathon distance, by a minute and a half at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/2008\/race-review-rochester-half-marathon\/\">Rochester Half Marathon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been meeting and getting to know a lot of runners through a tool called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/2008\/feeling-a-little-twitter-pated\/\">Twitter<\/a>.\u00a0 It has been a fun way to connect and share about running and other random bit of life.\u00a0 I even introduced the idea of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/2008\/twitter-tagging\/\">tagging runs<\/a> in Twitter so we can see each other&#8217;s better.<\/p>\n<p>I am almost a 1\/4 of the way to my goal for raising $2,000 to support the great work of <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"World Vision\" rel=\"homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.worldvision.org\">World Vision<\/a> around the world.\u00a0 This month&#8217;s related posts included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/2008\/mixing-passion-with-change\/\">Mixing Passion with Change,<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/2008\/money-well-spent\/\">Money Well Spent,<\/a><\/li>\n<li>a look at my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/2008\/running-in-africa\/\">Running in Africa<\/a>, and<\/li>\n<li>a look at what athletes and World Vision are doing in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/2008\/athletes-for-darfur\/\">Darfur<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>August 2008\/2007 Monthly Mileage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Running &#8211; 175.5 \/ 123.26<\/p>\n<p>Biking &#8211; 184.1 \/ 25.3<\/p>\n<p>Swimming &#8211; 700 \/ 0<\/p>\n<p>Last year was an eventful month as well.\u00a0 I raced a few times, not doing as well as I did this year.\u00a0 It was also extremely hot last year in Indiana, while my summer here in Minneapolis hasn&#8217;t been too bad!\u00a0So to help deal with the heat I offered some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/2007\/its-a-raging-inferno-outside-tips-to-beat-the-heat\/\">tips to avoid the inferno<\/a>. I raced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/2007\/race-review-pop-weaver-5k\/\">5K<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/2007\/race-day-bears-of-the-blue-river-10k\/\">10K<\/a>. I got a Sansa MP3 player and talked about the other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/2007\/what-running-equipment-do-you-use\/\">&#8220;equipment&#8221;<\/a> I used to run in.\u00a0 This was pre-Garmin days! In the Olympic build-up year I took a look at an unusual banned substance &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/2007\/caffeine-a-banned-substance\/\">Caffeine<\/a>. Yes, in high enough quantities, caffeine is considered illegal.
