{"id":2838,"date":"2011-09-02T08:56:35","date_gmt":"2011-09-02T13:56:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/?p=2838"},"modified":"2011-09-02T06:56:54","modified_gmt":"2011-09-02T11:56:54","slug":"race-review-autumn-salomon-trail-series-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/2011\/race-review-autumn-salomon-trail-series-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Race Review: Autumn Salomon Trail Series #1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A nicely organized, fairly low-key 5.7k trail race at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.threeriversparks.org\/parks\/hyland-lake-park.aspx\">Hyland Park<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That is a good summary of the\u00a0Wednesday\u00a0night trail series called the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.autumntrailseries.com\/\">Autumn\u00a0Salomon\u00a0Trail Series<\/a>. \u00a0The race series is put on by local skier and endurance coach <a href=\"http:\/\/www.audreyweber.com\/\">Audrey Weber<\/a>. \u00a0On race night you could find her mom helping at registration and the food table!! A true family affair.<\/p>\n<p>I was actually surprised by the number of families who were hanging out supporting their runner at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.qbp.com\/\">QBP <\/a>parking lot\/starting area. \u00a0I assumed even with a 6:30 start that most of the runners would be coming straight from work and hitting the trails for a nice race\/speed session. \u00a0A few young kids even ran the race.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.salomon.com\/us\/\">Salomon <\/a>is the title sponsor so that meant shoe and gear giveaways. \u00a0My twitter friend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/jabrown200\">Jennifer <\/a>won a pair of shoes! Congrats!! All I got was a free water bottle and a mesh cinch backpack! \u00a0Plus a free short ART\/Massage session; this was well worth the $15 price of entry. \u00a0Dr. Chris worked on my IT band and it feels much better!<\/p>\n<p>Oh yea, a race report should talk about the race&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>But first, my results:<\/p>\n<table id=\"tblMain\" class=\"aligncenter\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Place<\/td>\n<td>Place\/Male<\/td>\n<td>Bib#<\/td>\n<td>Name<\/td>\n<td>Last<\/td>\n<td>Age<\/td>\n<td>Gender<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\">Time<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>25<\/td>\n<td>23<\/td>\n<td>18<\/td>\n<td>Nick<\/td>\n<td>Cross<\/td>\n<td>30<\/td>\n<td>Male<\/td>\n<td>0:27:34<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>My Garmin said 3.6 miles in 27:34 which is 7:39 pace.<\/p>\n<p>We started pretty much right on time and hit a short gravel trail that took us away from QBP into the south-end of Hyland Park and uphill right away. \u00a0Audrey described the course as a &#8220;stubby lollipop&#8221; and the stick part took us into the rolling meadow area before going downhill. \u00a0 I don&#8217;t remember the course quite blow by blow, but there were several hills none of which were singularly super-challenging. \u00a0I&#8217;ve not done any speed work and don&#8217;t get a lot of hill training in so they made the race a bit difficult.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/salomon1map.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2840\" title=\"salomon1map\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/salomon1map.jpg?resize=300%2C273&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/salomon1map.jpg?resize=300%2C273&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/salomon1map.jpg?w=664&amp;ssl=1 664w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The plan had been to start of easy and pick it up throughout and then see what I had left going into the third mile. \u00a0 I went out a little harder than I probably should have, but otherwise executed the plan well. \u00a0Once we all got sorted out I only got passed twice. \u00a0At the half way point you can see my pace starting to creep upwards &#8211; before getting significantly slower at the 5k mark. \u00a0 I thought the race was only a 5k so after 2 miles I slowly picked up the pace and when I hit the 3 mile mark really started to pickup the pace a bit. \u00a0Then I hit the sign that said &#8220;5k&#8221;. \u00a0Oh, crap. \u00a0Is this a 5 mile race? That is why I slowed down again &#8211; fairly significantly. \u00a0I was evaluating how I felt and the possibility of having to run 2 more miles. \u00a0I got more than a little anxious about this uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/salomon1paceele.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2839\" title=\"salomon1paceele\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/salomon1paceele.jpg?resize=300%2C185&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/salomon1paceele.jpg?resize=300%2C185&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.teamcrossworld.com\/running\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/salomon1paceele.jpg?w=821&amp;ssl=1 821w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, we came back into the meadow area and I realized we were getting close to the lollipop stick and I tried to regain my composure and finish the race with a downhill aided &#8220;kick.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hyland Park isn&#8217;t an amazingly beautiful park, especially on a hot (82) summer day. \u00a0The course was on wide cross-country ski trails and an occasional paved trail. I felt bad for the guy wearing spikes! \u00a0The lake is pretty, but you don&#8217;t actually get to see a lot of it. \u00a0There was also a section that was really soft ground &#8211; in past years it has been covered in wood chips which made it a little spongy. \u00a0I don&#8217;t remember the wood chips but the ground was still spongy. \u00a0I tried to run in as straight of a line as possible through the curvy sections and always felt like there was someone ahead of me to focus on reeling in.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a link to Audrey&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.autumntrailseries.com\/2011\/09\/season-opener.html\">race recap<\/a> as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheet\/pub?hl=en_US&amp;hl=en_US&amp;key=0Al9zc2g9wpn3dDJyT0swQ2VvVjNQaVVWZEJkT2xBbVE&amp;output=html\">full results<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I wish this race series wasn&#8217;t so far from our house or that we had more than one car. \u00a0I was planning on biking with Nadia in the trailer the 17 miles from home to QBP with Christy meeting us as the start. \u00a0Fortunately, she got off work early and made it home in enough time for me to use the car! \u00a0But it adds a little stress to the race for those extra logistics. \u00a0I don&#8217;t know if I&#8217;ll make it to the next race on Sept 14, but I&#8217;d like to try&#8230; Anyone else in?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A nicely organized, fairly low-key 5.7k trail race at Hyland Park.
