Dehydrated?

Clean drinking water...not self-evident for ev...

I’m pretty sure I got dehydrated yesterday.  When I got home from a full day of programming and a post-work meeting I was exhausted.  My face felt really warm and even after a shower I still felt blah.  I didn’t want to interact with my amazing wife, but just wanted to veg out.

The day didn’t seem out of the ordinary, I did a 2 mile run – drank water and had breakfast.  Then I rode to work, taught my class which included 9 miles of bike riding and finished off my water bottle.  Drank another bottle during lunch and the first part of the afternoon program.  Biked to my meeting (drinking some more) and got a fruit smoothie.  Refilled my bottle and drank more on the way home.  I had some more water with dinner.

This morning when I woke up, I was extremely tired and felt very thirsty.  So more water did I drink.  The clue I guess should have been that I didn’t really have much urge throughout the day to pee.  It is hard to force yourself to drink until you pee when you are supposed to be in front of kids all day without any real breaks.

Yesterday wasn’t an extremely hot or humid day, but I was active all day and obviously didn’t get enough water – which is a big no,no and something we harp on the kids about all the time.

One thing I’ve done in past weeks is to drink some type of electrolyte drink during lunch or at some point in the day.  This ensures that you are getting hydrated, but also replaces some micronutrients that your body depletes through sweating.  I need to remember to grab some of the Gatorade in my car as I gear up on my bike.  On some of my longer bike training rides I’ve been using Nuun tablets and that has helped with electrolyte replacement as well.  Nuun claims to not create a sticky mess in your bottle!

So be careful out there and stay hydrated.

Government Waste

This picture represents your tax dollars that will be thrown away for several reasons.

1) Since these lunches were paid for through the Federal School Lunch program only individuals under the age of 18 are allowed to eat them. Even those these food items are on the "share" table at the end of snack time they must all be thrown away.

2) Even if we didn't legally have to throw them away, I wouldn't want to eat them.  I've tried (shh) these nasty sunflower butter and jelly pouches and couldn't finish them.  As you can see here at least 30 kids didn't even bother trying to eat them or the white milk being served (at an afternoon summer program – who wants to drink milk after being hot and sweat for 3 hours?).

3) The kids enjoy some of the snack items, but some of the black boxes represent unopened packages of snack.  Some of the younger kids are "forced" to take one even if they don't want to eat it.  But they might as well put it on the share table to be thrown away so that tomorrow there is a better chance of getting something more enjoyable.

I don't have a solution (except to find snacks that kids would enjoy).  But it all seems like such a waste.  These snacks and their friends (lunch) are nasty to look at and don't usually taste that good.  Who can blame a kid for putting them on the share table? And with nasty food there isn't too much concern of an adult eating one unless they were desperate, but then we can't mix our Free School Lunches with our other Federal food programs!

I Got Caught

With my helmet on and earned a free ice cream cone. I took my bike maintenance class out for a short ride. We stopped to do some mechanical work on a bike and a Park Police Officer stopped and gave the kids “tickets”. This is an excellent partnership between the Park Police and Dairy Queen. It provides a positive interaction between the badge and kids, encourages safe and smart behavior, and who doesn’t like a free cone?  Sadly, I didn’t get one 🙁

I Ran 3 Miles

in 2 runs.  Isn’t that exciting? It is scary how exciting running a mile can feel, but it is great!  My knee still hurts a little but it seems to go away after a bit and hurts less when running on soft ground.  Both of the runs were piddly little ones from my house and were pretty much unexciting.  Except, the one morning I saw what could have been a kettle bell class on the grass along the Midtown Greenway.

It has been easy to get these short runs in during the morning, but has been harder to keep up the other workouts.  Though I did do almost 83 miles on the bike.  25 of that was a fairly hard ride on the Greenway to the West ending up at Bryant Lake Regional Park and hitting some quality miles.  I averaged over 16 mph for the ride which did include some stop and go in the Hopkins area, plus getting a little lost and riding on some chipped limestone that was only a little above mountain bike trails (Lone Lake Park).

I wasn’t able to make the group swim this week so I did 650 yards on my own at the YWCA on Friday.  I did them nice and slow.  I noticed that my form wasn’t as good during the slow parts, but I did a fast 50 towards the end and felt like my form improved considerably.  I guess that is similar to running, sometimes your best form is when you are running faster.

We also went camping which was a relaxing way to end the week, though we only hiked a few flat miles on Sunday and survived some crazy Saturday night storms.

Things are coming together nicely for the Ragnar Relay in a few weeks.  I guess I need to figure out how I want to promote my fundraising, if I’m still going to do it.  I know that the kids in Africa would appreciate clean water to drink, so I guess I better work on that!

This week I’m teaching Bike Maintenance and Exploration!

This week’s One Post is about the Midtown Greenway.
