2011 Ragnar Great River Leg 5 Recap

For the 2011 Ragnar Relay – Great River edition I was the number 5 runner.  This is a different leg than I had last year and was the longest overall distance for the team.  An 8 mile, 6 mile, and 7 mile run sounded pretty intimidating and my first run was the worst.

Our team (MN Rocks) started in Winona at 9am and our lead off runner started us off quite well.  By the time it was my turn to run (at 1:30pm) the sun had been out beating down on us for hours and with there being virtually no shade along the road I prepared for an 8 mile run in rough conditions.  I had hydrated throughout the day and it the toilet a few times so I felt prepared for whatever Ragnar could throw at me.

Here is a map and the elevation chart (this chart looks bad, but the graph is only 200 feet – so the elevation spikes are pretty minimal).

I started out a little too fast which probably doesn’t surprise anyone who’s followed me for awhile.  But I did realize this and try to slow myself down.  I felt comfortable and that was pretty much my goal – to stay comfortable and try to hit 8:30 pace for most of the run. We ran through the cute little town of Alma to start the run.  The first part of this leg was on the Mississippi River which was beautiful (when the trains weren’t passing by).  The rest of the leg was near a smaller river and marshy land.

I was carrying water in my hand held water bottle and was drinking from it regularly, but by mile 4 I was really starting to feel the heat.  I started picking points up ahead and forcing myself to run to it and repeating that process.  After 3 or 4 times I realized it was unrealistic to continue doing that for 4 more miles and picked one more point and walked for a bit.  I walked, took my Gu, and drank a lot of water from my bottle.

I ended up walking 3 times before the end of my run.  One of the other vans let me squeeze a wet towel over my head/back and that helped cool me off! Thanks dude who let me use the towel!  This leg did have 2 water stops along the way which was nice.  The volunteers at these stops weren’t super-excited, but it was hot.  Most of the volunteers along the way were super-energetic and excited to be a part.

After the last time walking I ran for what seemed like a mile and decided that at the short little power line pole if I couldn’t see the exchange area I would take a short break.  As I turned the corner a little more I could see the bright orange vests of the spotters and knew I was within striking distance.  Each exchange has a set of spotters about 400 yards ahead of the exchange who communicate back to the exchange what runners are coming up so that the teammate is ready and waiting in the exchange chute!

Boy was I glad to be done, in the shade, and drinking some cool water!!  After relaxing for a few minutes, we hopped into the van and drove ahead to cheer on Aaron.  The problem with Ragnar is that you don’t get a lot of time to stretch and relax after your specific run.  I did take the opportunity to get out of the van and stretch while we waited for Aaron to pass us.

Here are a few random pictures from the first 1/3 of Ragnar:

Once we passed the slap bracelet off to Van 2, we stopped at the Nelson Creamery for some much deserved air conditioning and real food!

Weekly Report

With the Ragnar Relay looming at the end of the week I didn’t want to expend too much energy training – specifically running.  I ended up with a lot lower all around mileage than expected though.  I did a fair amount of riding around town doing errands with Nadia attached to the back of the bike so I’ll count the biking as good.

Sadly, I didn’t get a swim in.  I tried.  I scheduled an appointment for Nadia at the YWCA’s babysitting service and we showed up. Only to see signs everywhere saying the pool was closed for annual maintenance.  I had seen the signs but didn’t really pay attention to the dates.  Ugh.  I was wearing my swimsuit and had only brought 1 t-shirt so I didn’t have a lot of work out options.  So I did a 5 minute warm-up on the treadmill and spent 30 minutes stretching and using a foam roller.  The roller at the YWCA was still nice and firm so that felt really good!

Ragnar was great, but tough.  Each leg had a unique challenge (I’ll write more later).  The first 8 mile run was in brutal sun and heat that while I tried to be prepared still hurt way too much.  The second (overnight) 10k run was pretty much uphill the whole way and some girl embarrassed me in front of my van so we ended up duking it out for 4 miles (I won!).  The last 7 mile leg was all up and down – no real flat spots.  So I’m a little stiff and sore! But Ragnar is a lot of fun!

Shoes, Shorts and a Garmin

A recent daily mission over at Daily Mile was

What workout gear do you pack when you travel?

Since I’ve been training for a triathlon I’ve thought a lot more about this topic than previously, but I still pretty much only worry about bringing a pair or two of shoes, a pair or two of shorts and a Garmin.  Well, ok a tech shirt and “running” socks as well.

Depending on where we are going really makes a difference in how I pack.  For example, when I went to Spain this spring I brought 2 pairs of running shorts and my Garmin specifically for running at least twice.  I could have only brought 1 pair of shorts and washed them out, but oh well.  I made sure that I brought several pairs of running socks and tech shirts that I could wear throughout the week while touring and then re-wear them for a run.  I brought a pair of my running shoes to wear around while we were touring.

That has become my travel strategy for recent travel where I want to run.  Wear a tech shirt on the travel day or one of the first days so that I can re-wear it for a run later in the week. Running gear doesn’t have to take up a lot of space which is super-nice.   When we went up with Christy’s family to a cabin over the 4th of July I was bringing my swimsuit already since it was on a lake and so I threw in my goggles, though I never went for a training swim.

I think the Garmin is important when you are travelling for two important reasons – 1) it gives you accurate distance and time information (and stores it for you until you are able to log it), and 2) if you get lost in unfamiliar territory it can help you get back home!

When travelling, pack light and don’t be afraid to wash your clothes in the shower/sink and re-use them (or at least get the stink out).

The weather was amazing all week long – mid to upper 60’s in the morning and mostly in the upper 70’s for highs! It made it easier to go out and train.  It has been a little harder with watching Nadia during the day to swim and bike.  I used the YWCA’s babysitting service to get one swim in right before one of our parent child swim classes. I really need to hit the open water again at least once or twice before the triathlon.  I didn’t do any official training bike rides, but got several rides in while pulling the trailer of similar distances to what I was supposed to do.  I did hit my running mileage target which is good.  I met up with my Ragnar team on Sunday for our final pre-relay meetup and had a nice run around Lake Calhoun before enjoying some delicious Punch Pizza. A couple of runners said that was the only reason they came!

Ragnar is this coming weekend and I’ll be running 21 miles in 36 hours!

Here are the weekly totals:

Bike: 39 mi

Run: 16.4 mi
