Race Review: Lapel CdLS 5K

This race is probably the definition of low-key events. With a 7:30am start, you are able to beat most of the heat typical of mid-July weekends. This year it was almost chilly at the start due to weird weather patterns. I feel this event is so low-key that I actually rode my bike the 10 miles from Anderson, raced, then rode my bike back.

All proceeds from this event benefit the CdLS Foundation, which provides support to families who have a child with Cornelia de Lange Syndrome. The foundation is located in Connecticut, but this is a personal issue for the race organizers as they have a child with CdLS. They have done everything possible to maximize “profits” than can be sent back to the foundation.

The course is exceptionally flat, and would be a good PR course if it weren’t for the 180 degree turns. This year there were only 2, but that was because the leaders missed a turn (no one told them where to go, although a map was available at the registration area), the field followed and we all set some amazing times, I passed the mile mark at 3:41. Typically there are 3 180 degree turns, one water stop and a loop around a little park to make the 5K distance, this year’s distance was approximately 2.7 (various GPS watches gave slightly different distances).

Ample water, grapes, and bananas were available at the finish. An important note is that this race is not scored in the traditional sense. They give out overall and age group awards but it is based solely on your bib # and finish order. A clock is viewable to get your finish time, but they do not track finish times. This year’s age group awards where blue, red, and yellow (I think) key lanyards. One older runner asked, “Where’s my whistle?!?”

To add to the fun flavor of the event, random awards were given to the 8th place (8th year of the event), 17th place (Conrad’s, the young man with CdLS, age), and 21st place (21st year of the Lapel Village Fair) of each division (men, women, walkers).

This event is a part of the Anderson Road Runner’s Road Race Series, which is where many of the participants come from.

My time was 17:09 overall with 3:41 (.6miles) 6:25, 7:02 (1.1 miles), which is a 6:22 pace, which got me 4th place overall.

Race Results Recap

Here are results from July 4th and July 7.

Chesterfield Optimist 5K & 10K had about 125 participants in both events (evenly split between 5 & 10K).  Muncie runner Tyler Proctor, 17, won the 5K in 17:09 (5:31), Highland runner, Chris Jones was right behind him at 17:55 (5:46).  Each year this race draws a lot of local high school runners looking for a mid-summer time trial.  Gwen Kemple of Anderson, won the female division in 19:10 (6:10).  The result sheets don’t differentiate walkers and runners in the 5K divisions.  In the 10K Muncie runner Matt Kimbrell won in 35:22 (5:41) and Ann Morris won the female division in 50:34 (8:08).

CarmelFEST Freedom Run 4.4 mile race had 759 participants.  Josh Trishler, 28, won the race in 21:59 (4:59) by almost 21 seconds.  Former Pendleton runner, Brock Hagerman placed sixth in 22:54 (5:12).  Lucie Mays-Sulewski, 36 of Westfield, won the woman’s division in 26:18 (5:58).  All proceeds benefited Donate Life, Indiana.

Fast Track Mile was won by Lucas Roscoe in 4:26 out of 200 men. Kayla Alexander won the women’s division in 5:16 out of 200 women. Terre Haute High School won the boy’s high school division with 4 runners running a combined 19:15 and Otter Creek Middle School won the middle school boy’s division in 22:59 with 4 runners.  Terre Haute High School girls’ team won their division with a combined time of 23:53, Otter Creek Middle School also won their division in 24:29.

Mayberry Classic in Clay City had about 100 participants in the 5K, 2Mi Walk, and 1/2 Mi run combined. Anthony Witt won the 5K in 16:00 (5:08).  It appears that Jessie Vansickle won the female division in 20:58 (6:44).   Kole Smith smashed the walking competition in 16:21 (8:10) and Megan Vansicle walked 28:53 (14:26).  In the kid’s 1/2 mile run Landon Swearingen ran 3:01 (6:02 pace) and Alisha Steward wasn’t far behind in 3:11 (6:22).

I will post other results if I get them.  Congrads to all those who participated!

Race Results from June 30

Here is a quick roundup of results from the weekend.

Haynes-Apperson 4 mile race was won by Kyle Walsh of Kokomo in 20:33 (5:09). It was a competitive field with BJ Needler of Wabash coming in second in 20:40 (5:10) and local favorite, Andy Prieshoff running 23:06 (5:47) to finish 8th. The top female was 14 year-old Waverly Neer from Russiaville with a time of 24:22 (6:06). Two hundred and forty-four participants completed the 4 mile road race, while eighty-four completed the 3 mile walk. Greg Callahan, Muncie, won the walk in a time of 30:12 (10:04) and Mary Miller of Bunker Hill won the female division in 31:58 (10:40). Since they posted the fun run results I’ll highlight them: Carl Christianson, 16 won, but may have been pacing Heidi Freeman, 12 of Kokomo; they both finished in 5:39. Quite impressive Heidi!

The Summer Scamper 4 Miler with eighty-two participants was won by Ramon Chairez in 23:38 (5:54) and the female winner was Carla Yerkes who ran a 27:40 (6:55) to place tenth. Ramon was in the 15-17 age group and Carla the 45-49.

Race Results Roundup 6-23-07

An excellent weekend to race weather-wise! I know I enjoyed it and almost 1,000 others did as well!

Columbus’ Firecracker 5K was won by 19 year-old Nick Arensmann in 16:50 (5:25). Lynn Marsh, 24, won the women’s division in 19:44 (6:21).  Russel Fox won the walk in 33:38 and Jenny Rumph won the women’s division in 40:05.  I’ve seen Russel in action, he’s quite impressive!

Fisher’s Freedom Festival 5K had 516 runners and 79 walkers.  Chris Swisher, 24, of Fishers won in 15:00 (4:51), beating out a tough top 15, including Kyle Carey of Pendleton, Gary Romesser of Eagle Creek, and a wide range of high schoolers.  The top female, Steph Dueriger, was actually 11th overall with a time of 17:08 (5:32). Twelve-year old Patrick Montgomery won the 5K walk in a time of 33:14.  He was walking with fellow twelve-year old Brook Byrd who finished in 34:56.  Both are from Fishers. (Did they run part of it??)

Buzzards Roost 10K with just under 100 participants had an excellent field.  Mark Diveley finished in 35:59 (5:49) Another tough front pack, 5th place was still under 39 minutes.  First place female Rachel Young, ran 40:45 (6:35).  This race attracted high school runners from Alexandria, Noblesville, and Hamilton Heights.

This weekend was also the USATF meet in Indy.  There were some impressive times coming from the meet. This included meet records falling in the 100m and 200m dash, and the 1500 with Alan Webb running a 3:34 (about a 3:50 mile). To make a comparison from this weekend’s results at the USATF meet:

  • Bernard Lagat won the 5K in 13:30 (4:20)
  • Shalane Flanagon won the women’s 5K in 14:51 (4:46)
  • Swisher’s 15min 5K would not have competed in the men’s and would have earned him 2nd in the women’s division.
  • Abdu Abdiraham won the 10K in 28:13 (4:32)
  • Deena Kastor won the women’s 10K in 31:57 (5:08)
  • Diveley’s 10K finish (35:59) would not have competed in the men’s nor the women’s.

They are flying!!
