90 min run

Monday was President’s Day and I didn’t have to work so I took some extra time to go to Fort Snelling for a run on Pike Island. I knew it would be pretty icy so I took my new Yaks Tracks along for the ride. Good thing since the trails were solid sheets of ice. They worked pretty well and I never really slipped too much. It wasn’t the easiest 3 mile run due to the choppy conditions of the ice. It was 23 above and 12 wind chill. The Garmin battery malfunctioned again so I didn’t get an exact time or distance.

Tuesday was a nice morning for a speed workout! It was 23 with the wind chill around 15 and sunny!  I ran 6 miles out and back on the Greenway using my Garmin to clock the 7 x 400m intervals at 5k pace.  I set the plan for today of running sub-90 second intervals and nailed it.  1:23, 1:30, 1:29, 1:29, 1:28, 1:30, 1:29 I did 400m rest after each interval as programed in the Garmin. There were still small patches of ice on the trail but none that really hindered my running.   The wind was also in the face on the way back. I finished the 6 miles in 47:42 and felt pretty good about it.

Wednesday brought a much needed 3.25 mile recovery run on my Metrodome loop.  My legs were pretty tired and I ran it in 27:09 which is well over 8 minute miles.  We had just gotten a dusting of snow and the temp was 27 with a 15 degree wind chill, so not too bad!

Thursday was a well deserved day off! It was like 4 above when I woke up so I was doubly glad not to have to run.

Friday was supposed to be a tempo run but my legs felt very sluggish. It was 9f without any wind so that didn’t really have too much of an impact.  I think it was mainly just my tired legs.  I barely even made it under 7 minute pace and my tempos should be at 6:30.  Oh well.  I ran 6 miles in 47 minutes.

Saturday we had planned to meet at Theodore Wirth park and run on some different trails.  We got 5 inches of snow overnight and the Park Board hadn’t plowed any of the roads or paths yet along that stretch so we opted to go down to Cedar Lake and run some of the lakes because they had been plowed.  We got 11.5 miles in 1:33:00 for the morning.  It was around 18f with a pretty rough wind chill.  When we were running on the east side of Calhoun it was quite brutal.  Some places still had significant snow but for the most part there was decent footing.

Sunday we met at the falls again.  We ran west on the Minnehaha Parkway and ran around Nokomis.  The paths were pretty clear except for a few parts that had drifted back onto the trail.  Mike even brought Poncho along, who did quite well for the 6.25 mile run. The temp was 2 and the wind chill was back down to -12 which wasn’t too pleasant, but it was a good run at a relaxed pace.  We finished in 54:44.

Weekly Total:

Running -36 miles

Biking – 9 miles

Week 1: Half Marathon Training

This begins my first week of half-marathon training for the Lake Minnetonka Half-Marathon.  I decided to do something a little different, yes I want a PR but I also want a “fun” race with maybe some scenery. Running part way around Lake Minnetonka seems to fit that bill!  As far as a training plan goes, I really enjoyed Hal Higdon’s marathon schedule that I used last fall so I thought I’d give him another try with his Advanced Half-Marathon program.  It is a 12 week program that begins NOW!

3 m run + strength
6 x hill
3 m run + strength
40 min tempo
Rest
3 m run
90 min run (3/1)

Monday I did my standard loop around the Metrodome for 3.14 miles in 27:14.  It was 33 but 24 wind chill. I was a little overdressed for pretty much the whole run.  Most of the sidewalks were clear with only small patches of ice to be found.  Oddly my Garmin said it’s battery was low and didn’t even last long enough to find a signal.  That was frustrating since it was fully charged yesterday when I unplugged it from the computer.

Tuesday I ran to the West River Road so that I could do hill repeats going south up the the Franklin St Bridge.  The sidewalks were still a mixture of slush and ice thanks to the warmer weather we’d been having.  It was actually 40 with off and on drizzle for this particular workout.  I finally got off the sidewalks to run on the road because they were so dangerous.  About 2 miles into the run I had hopped back on the sidewalks and fell.  I didn’t just fall, somehow I fell and rolled.  I got up shook myself off and kept running.  My knee hurt a little bit but I felt fine.  I continued on to the road and did my 6 hill repeats.   I did 3 up the southbound ramp to Franklin’s eastbound.  They are approximately .15 of a mile or 264 yards.  They were in 1:10, 1:15, and 1:11.  The next 3 were straight up the River Road towards Franklin and approximately .23 miles or 400 yards.  I ran them in 1:37, 1:35, 1:36.  They were longer but not as steep. Total mileage was 7 miles in 60 minutes.

Wednesday was a nice easy 3 miles in 25:02.  It was a good recovery run with the temp above freezing again at 33 though the wind chill was 25.  Most of the run was on dry pavement which was a very nice change in pace!

Thursday I took off.  I deliberated back and forth about this but my schedule makes Friday a better morning to do the Tempo run, even though it would be before Saturday’s long run.  I think I’ll plan on doing it this way unless I have something else on Friday morning.  Basically I’ll do the tempo run on which ever day is more convenient!

Friday I set off for a 40 minute tempo run along the Greenway.  The plan was 20 minutes out and 20 minutes back. There was light flurries and it was 18 with the wind chill at 8.  It was a headwind on the way out.  I ended up running 5.13 miles in 38:32. Close enough right?  There were little patches of ice here and there. Unfortunately my pace chart shows that I didn’t do a very good job of making it a tempo run.  I hit my 10k pace 2x’s but didn’t sustain it for very long. Some of the spikes in the chart are due to icey patches.

Saturday morning the Polar Bear group met at the Longfellow Grille/Dunn Brothers and set out for a nice long run on the River Roads.  We went south crossed Ford Bridge and then went north crossing the pedestrian bridge just south of Washington Ave for 11.37 miles in 1:27:37.  It was 10 but the wind chill of -1 made it kinda chilly.  You could see the frozen mist again which actually turned to snow for the latter portions of the run.  I waxed and waned throughout the run but the hills in the middle wore me out by the end.

Sunday we met at Minnehaha Falls again and ran the Get in Gear loop, again.   This was actually the fastest we’d run the course on a Sunday morning this year.  These Sunday runs are usually a recovery run for most of us.  It was 5 above with no wind chill so a pretty nice morning to run. We ran it in 54:04.  As the weather has warmed a bit and we are also getting into spring training cycles I’ve seen more and more people out on the trails.

Total Mileage:

Running – 35.9 miles

Biking – 7 miles

The week began with a look back at Week Two of my half-marathon training.  The Complete Running Network created a Facebook group for their members to use as another way to connect. I’m a member of both CRN and the group but I’m not really active in either community. Former Governor and then Presidential Candidate Mike Huckabee is an avid runner and ran last year’s Boston Marathon.  I like measuring my training and numbers, so I offered 3 reasons why  I like to bike.  I biked a lot last year getting over a 1,000 miles on the two wheel machine! Last year’s Foto Friday was an ice sculpture of the sinking Titanic.

Week in Review

This is my last week before I begin an official training schedule.  It was an up and down week temperature-wise and with how I felt.  Overall a good week with a nice bump pack to where my mileage should have been!

Monday was my day off! It is a little weird but Monday’s are a nice day to “sleep-in”.  On the weekends I usually get up earlier than on a weekday since I don’t have to be at work usually until 9.

Tuesday was -4 which was a bit of a shock after being able to run in some nicer temps for a few days. The wind chill was at -21 for the 4.1 mile run downtown.  I finished in 33:50 the wind and ice made for slow going.

Wednesday was -4 again, but this time there was no wind! I ran through Powderhorn Park, but they don’t really plow their sidewalks very well so I decided not to do my usual run around the park.  I forgot to wear my earband underneath my balackalva again and my ears got a little cold.  Finished the 3.5 mile run in 30:07.  The parts through the park was in several inches of snow.

Thursday I was really tired and I looked at the weather on my phone (it was actually above 0) and rolled right back over and slept some more.  A Twitter friend made me feel guilty for not running because I had inspired her to run several times this week outside and it was actually a pretty nice morning out.  I felt a little bad but the sleep also felt really good!

Friday A beautiful sunny morning. I ran a somewhat different route taking 26th St from my house to Lake of the Isles then around the Isles to the Greenway and home. It ended up being 7 miles which I ran in 55:23. The footing was really good around the lake and mostly ok on the Greenway but pretty bad on 26th St. I detoured off the sidewalk and ran for awhile on the actual lake for a bit. It was pretty easy running – I ran on the groomed portion between two classic x-c skiing tracks – so it was smooth. It was sunny and 16 at the start at 7 with wind chill. On the way back it was into the wind and I was a little under dressed for that portion.

Saturday was a Polar Bear Run.  We met at Lake Nokomis Community Center and headed East along the Minnehaha Parkway.  The Parkway still had plenty of very icy spots along it.  We ran to the Minnehaha Falls and then the Get in Gear 10k loop up the West River Parkway across Lake St bridge and down East River Parkway to the Ford Bridge.  This stretch was pretty clear without a lot of ice or snow.  It got a little warm for part of it.  The temp was around 33 with a 24 wind chill so the wind was pretty bitey when we turned back towards Nokomis.  Some in the group were extending the run by taking a lap around the lake, I had thought about it but by the time we got back to the cars and I saw that we had already gone 9.5 miles I decided to be done! It was 9.6 on the Garmin in 1:18:59 so a pretty decent long run given the conditions.  I only almost fell once right after a turn.

Sunday we met at Minnehaha Falls again this time running towards Fort Snelling across the 5 Bridge back up the East River Parkway to Ford Bridge and then a loop through the VA.  It was a pretty solid run with our pace gradually picking up throughout the whole run.  We saw a turkey at Minnehaha and then 6 deer crossing the frozen Mississippi River.  It was sunny and 15 without any wind!! For the vast majority of the run the trails were clear.  We completed the run in 59:21.

Total Mileage

Running – 30.9 miles

Biking – 6 miles  (outside on Thursday night and Friday morning)

This week last year I started training for the Earth Day Half Marathon. I also shared a funny map that Garmin produced after running along the Mississippi River. The Garmin software actually thought I was in the river! This week’s Foto Friday was a picture from the frozen Minnehaha Falls. We haven’t been down there yet this winter.

Week in Review

Monday my requisite day off.  I thought I’d try some push-ups and managed to get 35 out without stopping.  I doubt I’ll go for the 100 push up thing again but would like to keep some strength training in.  I also used my new Exercise Wheel and did 5 thingys on it.  It was $6.99 at Aldi‘s so why not?

Tuesday my lower abs are a little sore! I ran downtown and did 4.25 miles.  It was a crisp clear morning for a run with temps at -2 and -12 windchill.  I cut it close once on a car coming and got honked at and then a few minutes later but I was clearly not impeding the driver’s forward progress.

Wednesday I woke up tired and feeling a little flu-y.  So I opted not to run.  I felt terrible all day, so I was glad I didn’t run.  I did do 40 push-ups and like 5 things on the ab roller.

Thursday was so warm I almost didn’t know what to wear for the 3 mile run.  It was 15 above with the wind chill at 0! I only wore my tights and felt really light and free!! We had gotten a fresh dusting of snow so it was a good run along the Greenway. I carefully did a few pickups on the way back for a 24 minute run.

Friday I had an early morning breakfast meeting so I went for a run later in the afternoon.  It was really nice by then so it might have been worth it.  I did 7.5 miles on my Minneapolis Riverfront loop.  My phone said it was 2 when I left but I think it was warmer and the sun really helped.  For the most part the sidewalks were fairly clear.  I think running a lot on the rough snow has started taking its toll on my lower legs though.  My right calf/ankle have been sore.   I ran it in 58:49.

Saturday Another early work commitment made it impossible (or at least not pleasant) to get up and run beforehand and I had to miss the Polar Bear run too. That was disappointing because they were going to a place we don’t run often.  So after the work-thing I went for a short run.  I started at Parade Stadium and ran on the Cedar Lake Trail into downtown and around Loring Park. Kind of a strange 3.3 mile route, but change is good.  It was in the mid-30’s for the 25:50 run.  Later in the day I could have worn shorts, but not quite yet!

Sunday I made it to the group run at Minnehaha Falls.  We opted for a different route and ran around Lake Nokomis.  It was a nice run – a little icy though since we were in the 40’s yesterday. It was about 25 and 13 windchill when we set out.  I enjoyed this route and the change of pace that it brought.  I felt pretty good too! We ran 6.33 miles in 56:23 so a nice easy pace.

Last year I spent the whole week talking about my brand-new Garmin Forerunner 205 ! Entitled Week of Garmin I reviewed the following parts of the Garmin: Why I like itMapping, various Software that can be used, and its comfort and style.  The weekend with a great picture of my Garmin eating my wife’s iPod.

Race Review: Frozen Half Marathon

You know the race will be interesting when the website offers this warning:

Extreme Weather

This is a cold weather race! Temperatures have been at or below zero for this race in the past. Hypothermia could be a definite concern. Make certain that you are dressed properly for conditions on the day of the race. In case of extreme weather conditions this race could be canceled or shortened. All entry fees are nonrefundable. An accurately measured 1/4 marathon course may be used as a short course option. Check with active.com for up-to-date weather information and changes in the race schedule.

The Securian Frozen 5K and Half Marathon is a part of St Paul’s Annual Winter Carnival.  Well sadly, we had those “extreme” weather conditions and the 1,200 pre-registrants got the following e-mail from Mary Anderson, race director.

Hi All,Just a note to let you know that the half marathon course has been shortened to approximately 6.5 miles (or half of the marathon distance) for tomorrow. The start time will remain the same at 9:00am.

The 5K race will go on as scheduled and start at 9:15.

The half marathon turnaround is just East of 35E on Sheppard Road and will be at the break in the median there so that runners can go westbound on the way out and eastbound (or with traffic ) on their way back.  We will move the water stop to this point and will be serving individual bottles to the runners. This should make it easier for volunteers.

Thank you participating in the 2009 Securian Frozen 5K and Half Marathon!

A wise decision given the fact that the actual temp was officially -15 with a wind chill in the -20’s. The morning broke with a clear blue sky and lots of shining sun, so that helped make the race bearable!  There was some confusion about the actual course distance.  The e-mail clearly says 6.5 (6.55 would actually be a half of a half) but the announcements coming over the PA system in the registration area kept calling it a 10k (which is obviously 0.35 miles shorter than half of a half).  My Garmin called it 6.46.

Attire? Yes how in the world do you dress to race at those temps? Well ultimately the same as you would to run in those temps!  Unlike warmer weather where you could wear less layers, it was vital to keep everything nice and warm. I actually wore the attire mentioned here, minus the silk balaclava and adding a pair of goggles.  I wore mid-weight smart wool socks, duct-taped shoes, tights, wind breaker pants, a singlet, long-sleeve dry-fit, long-sleeve cotton, under a wind breaker jacket, gloves, an ear band, and fleece balaclava.  I got a new pair of “fog-proof” goggles, but I steamed them up within the first mile.

Pre-Race We were able to park in the Securian building’s parking lot for $2 in downtown St Paul, which was great.  Take the skyway over to another building for packet pickup and then stand around and wait. Unfortunately all of the indoor restroom facilities were closed to the public so you had to venture out to the porta-potties lined up on the street.  We did a little warm-up jog and then waited for the race to start.  The directors were nice to wait until all the runners lined up, but it was a chip race so they should have just started instead of punishing those of us who followed directions!

The Race Almost immediately you go down a hill (about 200 feet in 1/4 mile) from downtown to the river. The race is an out and back along the Mississippi River on Shepherd Road.  The first mile came up pretty quickly and I came through in 6:35.  I tried keeping my goggles on because the wind was extremely bitey at this point and hurt my face, but I couldn’t really see out of them so I shoved them up on my face.  I tried to settle into a pace that would work for the whole race and picked some people to try to stay with.  A guy was reading splits at the 5k turn around, which was a little weird but I came through mile 2 at 7:08.  The course was a little hillier than I had expected since it was on the river flat.  They weren’t anything monstrous, but definitely steep enough to tire you out a bit.  I wasn’t really cold anymore at this point although the layers were making it hard to keep up a fast pace.  I came through mile 3 at 7:23.  The turn around point came pretty quickly after mile 3 and there was the race’s only aid station.  Dedicated volunteers passed out bottles of water – caps already off.  People were taking them, I did not.  Maybe I should have, but I didn’t feel like messing with my balaclava or spilling on myself! 22:34 at the turnaround.

I was actually starting to get tired at this point.  I was also getting really hot and raised up the balaclava and un-zipped my jacket a little.  This helped regulate the temps as the wind was solidly at my back.  Sadly I don’t think the added push of the wind helped my times too much and I came through mile 4 at 7:03.  Now I was beginning to get really tired and couldn’t wait for the finish line to arrive.  I was a little disappointed when I looked at my watch and saw that we were only at 4.5, yuck 2 miles to go.  Around the 5 mile mark we saw the 5k runners.  Fortunately we were on a divided road so they weren’t in our way yet (this usually isn’t a problem due to the half-marathon being farther and the 5k starting 15 minutes after us).  I came through mile 5 at 6:58.  I tried to pick up the pace because I was tired of getting passed, but I was also plain tired!  One of the 5k runners was wearing capri tights and the bottoms of her legs were bright red, looked painful.  I actually took my gloves off because my hands were sweating, my feet too but nothing you can do about that! I came through mile 6 at 7:25.  The last bit was straight back up the hill.  We joined the 5k runners.  I stayed way off to the side so as to not get stuck behind them and passed a lot of people up the hill which was a nice feeling! I may have passed a couple of half-marathoners on the way too and finished hard into the biting wind for the finish. 3:02 for the last 0.46 miles.

My official time was 45:31 (7:02 pace) [the website said 7:21 pace, but my Garmin and weblog both said 7:02] and good enough for 96th out of 661.  (Official results)  Evidently the 5k isn’t scored so I don’t know what the total turnout was.

Post-Race I hadn’t heard my teammates cheering me into the finish and I didn’t immediately see them so I wandered back into the buildings to get my post-race food and finisher’s mug! Then I wandered back out and got some pictures of people, including this great one of Mark Deters! I finally caught up with Nathan and we headed home.

A pretty crazy race day!!  Did you run it, what were your thoughts?
