September into October

Fall is here!! September’s Challenge was to read a chapter from the Book of Proverbs every day.  I did read all 31 chapters of the book, just maybe not on their prescribed day!  I’ve been using the YouVersion App which allows you to highlight and make comments while you are reading. It also has a lot of Bible reading plans.  I didn’t take the time to see if there is a Proverbs reading plan, but I’m sure there is.  You can see some of the verses I highlighted here.  This one is a little humorous and it jumped out at me:  “A bowl of vegetables with someone you love is better than steak with someone you hate.” Proverbs 15:17 But on a more serious note, there are a lot of good phrases there, even if you aren’t a person of faith. Next year I should probably actually pick a month with 31 days!

It appears I ran 9 miles in September for 2 runs…

I did bike almost 130 miles (128 recorded).  Which is slightly low as I didn’t record every 2 mile ride to church or Crossfit.

I did 9 CrossFit workouts.  I’ve realized that with Christy’s schedule I’m pretty much only able to go 4 times every two weeks without getting someone to watch the kids. We just finished up a 12-week Burgener squat cycle.  I might switch up my workout schedule so that I can go on the same days each week instead of missing every other week of M/F workouts.  I could go T/W/Th but I’m not sure my body could handle that, so I might try T/Th.  Thoughts?

The new job is getting better.  I’m feeling less overwhelmed on a daily basis.  I’m still not at a place where I’m comfortable to set some public goals.  But I am planing to have lunch with every 3rd grader (in small groups) over a 16 day period in October! If it goes well I’ll have lunch with other grades too.

October’s goal was:

30 Days of Core Work – Haven’t had a fitness challenge in a few months… Mix it up… 30 days of planks and push ups? or 30 days of planks and squats? Pick 2 or 3 areas and stick with it!

I had thought about changing this one, since I wasn’t planning to do CrossFit in January when I wrote the goals.  However, I know several people at the Box who are doing other “core” or body-weight workouts at home so I decided to leave it.  I’m planning to do at least 10 push-ups and situps each day.  I’m working on correct form for the push-ups so that I’ll stop getting corrected and have the strength to do a WOD with push-ups in it! Unforutnately (?) for my abs, they threw this at us on Friday!

No other goals in October! How was your September?

30 Days: August into September

August’s Challenge was to take a picture every day.  I wanted it to be something more artistic than just “oh crap I need a picture.” For the most part I feel that I did a pretty good job.  A few of them were definitely last minute, but I did get one every day.  I didn’t always post it on the day I took it, but that only messed me up once.  I like taking pictures, but with two kids it isn’t always easy to go somewhere and just take pictures.

It is a little embarrassing to post these mileage totals.  My biking was saved by Powderhorn 24 and I did run a half marathon!

Running: 18.8 miles – this means I only ran 6 miles outside of my race. Oops!

Biking: 135.2 miles – 85 of this was Powderhorn.  I didn’t work for the first half so I didn’t get many commuting miles in and I didn’t really get out for any longer rides since Powderhorn was looming!

Crossfit: It looks like I was able to go 9 times.  Most of my workouts were missed due to Christy’s work schedule, but we were also on vacation, and I missed a couple due to my half and Powderhorn.  My goal is 3x a week which for August meant I should have gone 13 times.  I have been going MWF, but I’ve thrown in a couple of T,R just to get the workouts in.  I even went in one day for an afternoon open gym since it worked with my schedule and I’d missed at least one workout that week.

I started a new job at the end of  August.  I had been looking for a School Social Work job all summer and had 6 interviews.  After I had started working my old job for 2 days, I got another interview and a job offer.  So now I’m a School Social Worker at Jenny Lind Elementary in Minneapolis.  Since I started about a week after everyone else I was a little behind and overwhelmed by so many new things all at once – new school, new job, new people, new building systems, etc.  It is slowly starting to feel like home and getting into a rhythm. I hope to still be able to bike commute, thought it will be at least twice as far as my previous commute.  As a result of this job change, I didn’t create any work related goals.  We also had already decided that we needed to stop our volunteer role as site coordinators for an Adult ESL program.  It was a hard decision but given the demands of our schedule we weren’t doing it justice and were neglecting our roles as parents and spouses!

My September 30 Day plan is:

Proverb a Day – With school in full swing it seems fitting to go back to the Book of Wisdom and read a chapter from the Book of Proverbs each day.

It is always good to spend more time in the Bible.  I don’t feel like adding any additional goals this month.  How was your August?

30 Days: July into August

I had written this post and then it got lost in the vast world of frustrating space!

July’s challenge was to spend 15 minutes outside each day.  I’m pretty sure that I managed to do that.  There is only one day that I remember thinking back that I wasn’t sure if I did or not.  But I’m pretty sure I made up for it on others days, especially the last 2 which were almost entirely outside! A lot of my outdoor time was work related; recess, bike club, and bus duty. Another significant chunk was working out via bike commuting, running, and biking.  The rest of the time was playing with the kiddos and trying to find some quiet space on the front porch or in the backyard!

Mileage totals aren’t that exciting:

Running – 36.1 miles – some of this is taper, but realistically our schedule makes it hard to run any distance consistently.

Biking – 213.6 miles – a lot bike rides for work.

Crossfit – 12 out of 13 possible workout days based on a 3x’s a week schedule.

I’m not really sure what to do about getting my running mileage up. Obviously, I could cut out Crossfit, but I need the weight training and it is easy to make up at home if I can’t go to the box.  Getting a treadmill is probably the only workable solution but that’s expensive and doesn’t sound like fun at all!  At least it has been consistent throughout the year!

My August challenge is

Take a Picture a Day – I’ve done photo challenges in the past, mostly trying to take a picture a day for a year and while that created some cool pictures, I also got some fairly lame ones.  Do it for a month and be creative.  Avoid the weird 30 day challenges that show up on Facebook!

As you can already note, I’m doing good so far!

I can’t think of any specific additional goals for August.  The school year will be starting up soon so that will be a big transition getting back into the swing of work and the routine for the next 9 months.  I’d like to hit 100 miles again during Powderhorn 24, but I’m not going to put a ton of pressure on myself for that.  By the end of the month I should establish 3-5 goals for my school (work) year.

What are your goals for August?

30 Days: June into July

The June 30 Day Challenge was to write a blog post every day. I missed 4 days from the month.  Which isn’t too shabby. Several of those times I thought about something to write and then totally forgot to do it. I did enjoy writing, even though it felt forced sometimes.  Sometimes I had a great idea and then struggled with finding the time for research and writing.  I wrote a bunch of the simple posts via my tablet’s WordPress App.  That is a pretty easy way to write a basic post – but it stores them on the device which makes it difficult to start writing and then update later or add pics or media.

I didn’t do a really good job of recording all of my mileage and it was a little challenging to always remember which way I did my commute.  But my May stats are:

Running – 50 miles

Biking – 85 miles

Crossfit – 11 times (some were core work at home)

Yay, I finally got my running mileage up.  50 miles isn’t anything to get too excited about, but it is definitely and improvement.  The biking mileage on the other hand is a significant drop.  That is partly due to the fact that my commute is now half of what it was during the school year! And a week off during vacation.  I’ve also switched into half marathon training mode – instead of riding mode.   Though I do need to be careful since I’m doing Powderhorn 24.  I joined a Crossfit box about halfway through the month so that is an addition to my training program!

July’s 30 Day Challenge is to be outside for at least 15 minutes each day.  It seems super easy, so we’ll see how it goes.  I would think between my running and biking that I’d easily hit that. Plus at summer school we go out for recess which ends up being about 15 minutes.

Other goals for July are to be consistent at Crossfit and to get some fundraising posts up for Team World Vision.

May into June 2014 30 Days

The month switched over with some thunderstorms!!  May was a busy month as I spent the first few days in Spain, did a 100 mile bike ride, and backpacked on the Superior Hiking Trail.  I also did some work and hung out with my family!!

The May 30 Day Challenge was to read a poem a day. I’m not 100% sure that I actually read one poem a day, but I did read at least 30 poems.  I downloaded the  Poetry app from the Poetry Foundation which “turns your device into a mobile poetry library.”  It has a spinning feature that lets you pick a poem based on a random theme.  I did fairly good reading from it almost daily –  I wish it had a reminder system.  But upon the death of Maya Angelou I decided to purchase a collection of her poems for my Kindle and read 10-15 of them.  This easily put me over 30 for the month.

I didn’t do a really good job of recording all of my mileage and it was a little challenging to always remember which way I did my commute.  But my May stats are:

Running – 20 miles

Biking – 273 miles

Both of these are quite a bit lower than April.   The running one is particularly embarrassing! I want to keep my biking mileage up while also getting into the training plan for my August 2 half marathon.   Training officially started last week, oops!

June’s 30 Day Challenge is to blog every day.  This is going to be  a hard challenge as I’ve struggled to blog once a week!  There are a bunch of blogging prompts out there in the 30 day format, but no one seems perfect for me.  I think I’ll just pull a few from them and maybe I’ll answer a few of the Question of the Day’s that I use for kids at school.

Additionally, I need to buckle down and do some core work.  I noticed it while backpacking.  I really need to hit it or I’m going to get hurt again.  So I’ll blog every day, try core every other day, and start following the training plan!
