Yesterday’s Run

I did an easy lap around the wet leaf covered trail at Shadyside Park in Anderson. The trail was fairly empty with temperatures around 52 with some strong winds.  I picked it up for the final 1/4 mile and completed the 2.64 lap in 18:42.  I finished the workout with a couple of accelerations.  I have some slight pain in the ball of my left foot.

Race Reports: Various

The following race report and pictures were submitted by Tammy Dale from the Nike Team Regional’s.

Dylan Dale running for Fishers Running Club finished 10th overall in the Junior Varsity race with a time of 17:35 at the Lavern Gibson Course in Terre Haute. His team finished second overall, finishing behind the winning team from York, IL the Elmhurst Running Club. (ranked number one in the Midwest Region) The boys varsity finished fourth overall, and are an “at large” candidate for NTN.

Seventh grader Ashley Dale entered the Girls Championship 5K Division, hoping to gain some experience for high school racing – and just for the “fun” of it. She finished the challenging state course in a time of 23:07…not bad having coming off health related issues. She had much fun, and as a note: her time would have placed her third in the Girls JV race, and seventh in the Freshman Class. 🙂

All the athletes were given cool gear from Nike/EastBay included some very sweet gear bags and running caps, and as an added treat for the day, they got to meet and chat with the second place finisher in the US Olympic Marathon trials, Dathan Ritzenhein.

The course records for both girls and boys were shattered with beautiful race conditions on a course Ashley likened to a “roller coaster.”

On another note: the Great Lakes Division I Championships took place Nov. 10th. Notre Dame took third and IU finished in fourth. Freshman, Cole Hardacre was the second scorer for IU! Complete results for both races can be found at www.onlineraceresults.com.

Thanks Tammy!

In other local running news, the Indy Star is reporting that Cindy Harris, 38 from Indianapolis, won the 6th Annual Go Vertical Chicago race up the 103 flights of stairs to the top of the Sears Tower. Harris has won all 6 events. The local stair climbing race is the annual Bop to the Top on February 2, 2008.

Weekend Workouts

I actually haven’t run since Thursday morning! We were at a conference and I didn’t feel like getting up super early to get a run in and our hotel didn’t have any workout facilities. So I had a nice weekend recuperating and resting!

Cool Running Blogs

I am currently subscribed to 3 of the 27 blogs available through the Cool Running News Feeds. Cool Running has recently become part of the Active.com network. Overall the site provides a range of resources, race calendar, race results, training tips, and a community/forum section.  They also have an online running log for you.

Back to the blogs,  I subscribe to the Community, Training, and Training Tips blogs.  After looking at the list again I might add the Midwest News blog and Top Headlines blog as well!

The blogs are pretty self-explanatory and none of them post very often.  The last few posts from the community blog are about the growing conflict between iPod users and race directors, and then a few about the Olympic Marathon trials. The last few posts in the training blog talk about the Honolulu Marathon, tips from Frank Shorter about self-coaching, and the use of protein while training. The training tips blog hasn’t been updated in awhile but talks about keeping a journal, fartleking, and the RICE method.

I hope you are able to enjoy some of the ideas presented in these blogs and that they help give you new insights into running.

Yesterday’s Run

I did an easy lap around Shadyside Park in Anderson which is approximately 2.64 miles, it was windy, even in the wooded section and about 36 degrees.  I ran the lap in 18:44 and did a couple of accelerations afterwards.  I saw maybe 5 people on this cool morning.

WEEKEND WEATHER

Yesterday’s Run

This is a new segment I’m going to start including where I talk briefly about yesterday’s workout.

I did an easy 5 miles at Mounds, charging up the major hills to loosen up my legs. It was in the upper 30’s and I felt great. I love the residual effect after tapering and running a major race. I ran my fastest time there this summer in 37:26.

Olympic Trials: Triumph and Tragedy

In an amazing performance early Saturday morning, Ryan Hall shattered the Olympic Marathon Trials record in an amazing 6 mile breakaway to finish in 2:09:02 (4:55).  He finished over 2 minutes ahead of his soon to be teammate Dathan Ritzenhein who broke away and finished in 2:11:07 (5:00).  Third place was captured by Brooks-Hanson standout Brian Sells who finished in 2:11:40 (5:01).  Khalid Khannouchi was able to hang on to fourth place and will the alternate for the US Olympic Marathon team going into the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

What should have been a day of celebration for US Distance Running and young American athletes, was also a day of mourning the loss of a friend.  Ryan Shay collapsed on the course at about 5 1/2 miles into the race.  According to various reports spectators quickly administered CPR and the EMT’s arrived quickly, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival to the hospital.  Our hearts go out to his wife of 4 months, his family, and friends which includes Ryan Hall.  Officials are still unsure of what actually caused him to collapse and we’ll likely not know for at least a week according to ESPN.  You can read Shay’s pre-race bio here.

Indiana Connections

Kyle Baker was a graduate of Highland High School, he ran a 2:31:37 (5:47) on Saturday placing 94th.  Kyle, 31, now lives in Grand Rapids, MI. Kyle qualified for the trials during last October’s Twin Cities Marathon running a 2:21:02. Baker has earned accolades as Michigan Runner’s Male Runner of the Year in 2003 and 2002 not to mention an impressive collegiate resume which includes several All-American and Big-Ten titles.  Baker was also profiled in a December 2002 issue of Running Times.

Cecil Franke, 39 from Dublin Indiana, competed in the trials and ran a 2:25:01 (5:32) placing 67th.  Cecil ran a 2:20:43 at this spring’s Boston Marathon but used his 2006 Columbus Marathon winning time of 2:18:13 to qualify for the Trials. Franke is a high school Cross Country coach at Centerville High School.  Last year in addition to his Columbus Marathon win, he also won and set a course record in Cincinnati’s Flying Pig Marathon.

Ryan Shay ran for Notre Dame and was from Michigan.
