April Highlights

Posted on May 03, 2008 under Highlights | No Comment

I can’t believe it is May already. 5 months in the Twin Cities and we are enjoying it all (except for the endless bouts of snow!)

April was a busy month with two races, the Earth Day Half-Marathon and the Get in Gear 10K. I also decided to step up and register for a marathon - Medtronic’s Twin Cities Marathon in October.

I started a new feature highlighting all the different style race numbers that we get.

Some random running news included a marathoner who captured a thief, a study about detraining, another study about running preventing dementia, the Chicago Marathon hits capacity, the autopsy report for Adam Nickel, the Wisconsin runner who died at Little Rock, and the Massai took on the London Marathon. Other running news included a bomb exploding in Sri Lanka during a marathon and a swarm of bees attacked runners in Japan.

I was able to find some humor and found two must read lists for runners.

At the beginning of the month I decided to upgrade my blog and almost had a major disaster. I think everything is fixed now but it was almost painful. UGH!!!

Shew it was a busy month - also don’t forget to check out Foto Fridays!

March Highlights

Posted on Apr 02, 2008 under Highlights | No Comment

Wow, Happy April!! Another month down! It is a little weird to celebrate April’s coming while shoveling off the sidewalk. But that is the joy of the Upper Midwest I guess!

March began with the tragic news that a Wisconsin Marathoner died after finishing the Little Rock Marathon. A few weeks later we finally learned what caused Ryan Shay to collapse and die during the Olympic Trials. Our hearts continue to go out to each family and their friends.

My training for the half-marathon continued in full swing. As part of that I joined the USATF-MN Chapter and ran my first race, breaking my goal time for the event (review). I also joined a USATF stretching study, which is hoping to make a concrete answer about pre-run stretching. I looked into more depth about the different ideas surrounding stretching and even launched a poll. I also talked about the importance of having a race strategy.

With the Olympics coming up I looked at the impact of smog and what athletes think about it. As a big advocate for the developing world I was very excited to learn about Meseret Defar’s support of the ONE Campaign and wearing their bracelet in the 3000m.

As the doldrums of winter continue here in Minnesota, I lamented about having to run on the roads all the time. My love of trail running was piqued this weekend again. I closed the month out with a look at the push-up, a powerful exercise, I never do!

Monthly Mileage - I ran 145.7 miles in March up 17% from February. My YTD total is 348.7. This puts me on track to run about 1400 miles for the year (assuming everything stays healthy!)

February Highlights

Posted on Mar 04, 2008 under Highlights | No Comment

February has really flown by, even with the extra day this year the month seems like it only started yesterday! It has been a pretty busy month for Team Cross as we continue to settle into our new digs!

With the dawn of the new month I started my training for the Earth Day Half Marathon. You can read about my weeks 1, 2, 3, and 4 of my 12 week training program. It was great to be able to start running with a local running group on Saturday mornings. I also dissected some of my training runs, which helped me understand them a little bit better while also hopefully giving you some new ideas! Here are some of the things I talked about: Supersetting, Hill Repeats, and Biking as a form of cross-training.

I finished my series about my new Garmin toy, but couldn’t help post this funny Garmin map which showed me running on the Mississippi River.

February was also a fun month playing on Facebook, Hucking a Marathon, going nuts, and watching the Lunar Eclipse. I just wish I could earn $2 million by racing!

My training totals for February are:

Running: 121.1 Miles or 15:57:20 hours

Bike: 54.4 Miles or 3:11:52 hours

Here is a graph of my runs (from RunningAhead):

January Highlights

Posted on Feb 02, 2008 under Highlights | No Comment

January has been a very busy month for Team Cross.  We moved almost 600 miles to Minneapolis and began setting up our lives here! It was definitely very busy but I was able to squeeze in runs (a first look) and postings throughout the month! January was mostly a base training month for me as I work towards an April half-marathon.

Here are my final thoughts about 2007. I wrote a week long series “Week of Garmin” that explored my newest gadget, the Garmin 205.

While enduring brutally cold weather I wrote about one of my favorite fruits: the Clementine! I also saw a local news story about a guy who suffered frostbite while racing, but he still won! Well I made some mistakes too, luckily no frostbite for me.  I also had to adjust to the new reality of lots of snow and ice, even on the sidewalks.

Marathon Guide.com released their statistics about the 2007 Marathon season.   I found an older story about a running club for homeless individuals, which really peaked my interest. The Spirit of the Marathon was released on January 24th, we went and saw it. Don’t forget about the Million Dollar Marathon! At the other end of the distance perspective I wrote a tribute to sprinter Jesse Owens.

I have done a lot of “blog research” to try and make my blog enjoyable for you my friends, fellow runners, and readers.  I shared some of my “vast wisdom” one day in the form of 10 Building Bloks of Blogging!

Yesterday’s Workout

I was finally able to make it back outside! I went out for an easy four miles and ended up running 4.51 in 36:40 along the Midtown Greenway.  It was about 26 outside so it was definitely a heat wave!  It felt good to be outside, I also did my 4 accelerations.   The Greenway was pretty much clear of snow and ice, but some of the sidewalks leading to and from it were solid sheets of ice due to last weeks warm spell, followed immediately by the deep freeze!

December 2007 Highlights

Posted on Dec 31, 2007 under Highlights | 1 Comment

Because of the holidays, December is a very busy month for most people, when you throw in a major move and a new Internet home, WOW it gets busy! Here are some of the highlights from December:

Since it was the end of 2007 I highlighted the Best of 2007:

Winter Weather has finally come and I offered 9 Winter Weather Tips.

A friend of mine ran the St Jude Marathon in Memphis, TN and I posted her race review. I also posted another guest race review, this was from a Kokomo, IN runner about the Monster Mash Dash in Indianapolis, IN.

I finished a three-part series analyzing my training for 2007. I did a spring half-marathon, an early fall 10K and a later fall half-marathon.

Workout Summary

Friday I finished the week with lower body lifting and then hit the elliptical for just 10 minutes easy. I planned on running Saturday and was just really trying to waste some time at the gym that’s why the time was so short! I did end up running Saturday. I ran the perimeter loop at Mounds State Park which is 3 miles. I finished the somewhat muddy loop in 25 minutes flat. It felt good to run again, even though I rolled my ankle/foot about a mile into the run. It doesn’t appear to be swollen or anything, but it definitely hurts!
