June 2012

Here are my goals for 2012 and my progress towards them:

Goal #1: Finish Buffalo Triathlon on June 3.  1/4 mile swim, 12 mile bike, and 3 mile run. (Under 1:15)

Completed.  I finished in 1:15:45.

Goal #2: Improve on my Square Lake time from last year (1:58) 1/2 Mile Swim 16.5 Mile Bike 5 Mile Run

My training has been pretty much on track.  I took a week or so off and got right back into training.  I’m using a plan from Beginner Triathlete again with 3 swims.  I’m using the 10k training plan from the FIRST method.  Its workouts are intense but I feel good about them.

Goal #3: Use and write about the FIRST Method for my running. 5k for the spring and 10k for the fall.

This started on June 19th.  I’ve had some scheduling issues but have gotten the intervals in each week and at least one other of the prescribed workouts.

Goal #4: Complete Project 345 Bible Reading plan – takes you through the New Testament in the year.

This continues to go well.

Goal #5: Read a variety of books (genre, style, authors).

I finished The Long Run, a short Kindle story about a guy who turned his life around in part with running. Water for Elephants is an interesting read that makes me glad I never became a Carny! Gruen weaved a fascinating tale of life on the circus trains that was based on real life experiences.

Goal #6: Document my thoughts on at least 6 of the books I’ve read.

I’m planning to write a review of Meb’s book.

Goal #7: Blog.

  • Running  – a little bit better since I had two events to write about.
  • Midtown Phillips – averaging one post a day
  • Nadia – averaging one post every two weeks.

Goal #8: Project 365

Overall I think I’ve done really well with this.  As I noted sometimes I forget or don’t do anything exciting and the picture is lame.  I’ve contemplated just stopping this goal.  I think I’ve come to the place where I’m going to try to remember to take a good picture and if it doesn’t happen that’s fine too.

Running: 37.6 miles

Swimming: 2.8 miles

Biking: 301.3 miles * thanks to Powderhorn 24 for the huge bump in miles.

LAST YEAR: I ran 49.6 miles, swam 2 miles and 282 miles on the bike.

May 2012

Here are my goals for 2012 and my progress towards them:

Goal #1: Finish Buffalo Triathlon on June 3.  1/4 mile swim, 12 mile bike, and 3 mile run. (Under 1:15)

The running has still been a little inconsistent, but the big race is coming up and I feel pretty good overall.  We will see on Sunday!

Goal #2: Improve on my Square Lake time from last year (1:58) 1/2 Mile Swim 16.5 Mile Bike 5 Mile Run

See above.

Goal #3: Use and write about the FIRST Method for my running. 5k for the spring and 10k for the fall.

We’ll have to scratch the spring attempt and retry for the fall.

Goal #4: Complete Project 345 Bible Reading plan – takes you through the New Testament in the year.

Reading some of the smaller books…

Goal #5: Read a variety of books (genre, style, authors).

I did finish Meb Keflezighi’s Run to Overcome.  I wasn’t super impressed.  He has had an amazing life and some great stories.  Watch for a fuller review later.  I didn’t have a lot of time to read this month.

Goal #6: Document my thoughts on at least 6 of the books I’ve read.

I’m planning to write a review of Meb’s book.

Goal #7: Blog.

  • Running  – not a very good job!
  • Midtown Phillips – averaging one post a day
  • Nadia – averaging one post every two weeks.

Goal #8: Project 365

I think I got one every day.  Sometimes it is a last minute, “Crap, I need to take a picture” and it isn’t very exciting.

Running: 31 miles

Swimming: 3.5 miles

Biking: 210 miles

LAST YEAR: I ran 57 miles, swam 0.8miles and 103 miles and 45 minutes on the bike.

April 2012

I’ve really been struggling to get all my workouts in each week.  It seems like I can get up one morning, but then struggle the next.  The 5:15 alarm makes it tough and knowing that some days I have to be home by 6am it is easy to psyche myself out.  April was 30 Days of Biking and I did pretty good with riding every day.  I missed riding 7 days which is a lot more than I thought.

Here are my goals for 2012 and my progress towards them:

Goal #1: Finish Buffalo Triathlon on June 3.  1/4 mile swim, 12 mile bike, and 3 mile run. (Under 1:15)

I’ve been getting plenty of swimming and biking in, but the running has been a little harder. Bike commuting is really helping build leg strength as I tow the trailer around.  I also got a new bike!  Thanks to Bikesdirect.com I got a new Motobecane Fantom CX.

Goal #2: Improve on my Square Lake time from last year (1:58) 1/2 Mile Swim 16.5 Mile Bike 5 Mile Run

See above.

Goal #3: Use and write about the FIRST Method for my running. 5k for the spring and 10k for the fall.

I’ve not been following it strictly, ok mostly not at all.  I’ve done some fartlek runs and some tempo runs but nothing consistent.  I’m not even getting the mileage in consistently.  Ugh.

Goal #4: Complete Project 345 Bible Reading plan – takes you through the New Testament in the year.

Finishing up the Book of Luke.

Goal #5: Read a variety of books (genre, style, authors).

I finished the Hunger Games series by reading Mocking Jay, I was a little disappointed in the ending.  We actually borrowed it from a friend so I was able to save my April Lending Library book for Meb Keflezighi’s Run to Overcome, but I haven’t finished it yet.  We also finished an interesting book called Nomad Diaries, we’d been reading it for a long time.  It started out as a decent novel about a refugee family from Somali and about half way through became really weird. It started out realistic and then the author just kept adding more and more drama to the story line that seemed unrealistic.

My goal for April was to take a bike related picture each day in honor of 30 Days of Biking and I did a really good job.  Only one day did I post a picture not related to biking and that was mostly because I was able to get a really sweet shot of downtown that couldn’t incorporate  a bike! See for yourself.   These are my 3 favorites:

Running: 32.5 miles

Swimming: 4.1 miles

Biking: 224 miles

LAST YEAR: I ran 49 miles, swam 500 yards and 136.3 miles and 46 minutes on the bike.  Last year I also ran the MDRA Mudball race during April but we were working the nursery that morning so I couldn’t make it.

March 2012

March was a super busy month.  I spent a week in Belize with a group of 8th graders and then immediately afterwards spent a week in northern Minnesota at Wolf Ridge with 7th graders.  It was a long two weeks, but a lot of fun!! This March was also the warmest March ever in Minnesota!

Here are my goals for 2012 and my progress towards them:

Goal #1: Finish Buffalo Triathlon on June 3.  1/4 mile swim, 12 mile bike, and 3 mile run. (Under 1:15)

I wasn’t able to do anything really except run while I was travelling, which I did 3 times each week while I was gone.  Right when I got back I was able to start bike commuting too, so I’ve been able to ramp both of those up.  Sadly, my official running training was supposed to start while  I was gone and I forgot to research the specific goals for each work out, so I just did more base mileage.  I’m waiting for a step-back week and then I’ll basically just cut one build cycle out of the training program for the running.  I can easily complete the 3 individual disciplines, now will just be over training on them to build overall endurance to combine them!

Goal #2: Improve on my Square Lake time from last year (1:58) 1/2 Mile Swim 16.5 Mile Bike 5 Mile Run

See above.

Goal #3: Use and write about the FIRST Method for my running. 5k for the spring and 10k for the fall.

This was supposed to start the week I was in Belize – see the above notes about waiting to start after a step-back week.

Goal #4: Complete Project 345 Bible Reading plan – takes you through the New Testament in the year.

Continuing to enjoy this reading plan.  Just started the book of Luke.

Goal #5: Read a variety of books (genre, style, authors).

March was actually a great month for reading.  I actually finished The Hunger Games late on February 29, and finished Catching Fire during March.  Both were super easy reads that kept asking to be read! I was able to get them both as part of Amazon’s Kindle Lending Library.  I also read We Die Alone: A WWII Epic of Escape and Endurance which was a great story about a Norwegian solider who was part of the Nazi Resistance efforts in Norway. I also read How to Become a Nonprofit Rockstar, which offered 50 tips to improve my nonprofit career.  Lastly, I’ve been reading Bike Snob on the Kindle app for my phone during lunch breaks and random down times for at least 6 months.  I finally finished it this month.  It is a pretty funny book with random stories and bike humor.

Goal #6: Document my thoughts on at least 6 of the books I’ve read.

not yet!

Goal #7: Blog.

  • Running  – not a very good job!
  • Midtown Phillips – averaging one post a day
  • Nadia – averaging one post a week

Goal #8: Project 365

I took a picture every day of March.  It was easy to do while in Belize and Wolf Ridge, I haven’t actually posted those pictures to the blog yet.  I signed up for 30 Days of Biking in April and am planning to take a bike related picture each day too!

Running: 39.5 miles

Swimming: 1.6 miles

Biking: 78 miles

LAST YEAR: I ran 33.7 miles, no swim and 21 miles and 30 minutes on the bike. Plus a 5 mile snow shoe!!! We didn’t really ever have enough snow for  long enough to snow shoe once this year.

February 2012

I started the month still sick, but have been feeling pretty normal now.  It has been hard to get up at 5:15 each morning to try and get a workout in.  Especially since it finally got cold again! I’m always glad I worked out, but it is a motivation thing.  I’m sure it will get easier!

Here are my goals for 2012 and my progress towards them:

Goal #1: Finish Buffalo Triathlon on June 3.  1/4 mile swim, 12 mile bike, and 3 mile run. (Under 1:15)

February was a much better month.  Training officially started and I’ve been trying to follow it.  I’ve gotten at least 1 workout per discipline in during my official training weeks!

Goal #2: Improve on my Square Lake time from last year (1:58) 1/2 Mile Swim 16.5 Mile Bike 5 Mile Run

See above.

Goal #3: Use and write about the FIRST Method for my running. 5k for the spring and 10k for the fall.

I’ve only run a few times.  Fortunately, I don’t have to start the FIRST training until March. I’m trying to get some basic fitness so that I  can do a test run to figure out where I should set my FIRST training at.

Goal #4: Complete Project 345 Bible Reading plan – takes you through the New Testament in the year.

Continuing to enjoy this reading plan.  It is currently in the Book of Acts.

Goal #5: Read a variety of books (genre, style, authors).

I started a couple of books in February, but haven’t finished one yet.

This has been getting better, I just need to remember to post them in a timely fashion!!

Running: 15.3 miles

Swimming: 1.2 miles

Biking: 2.5 hours

LAST YEAR: I ran 34.4 miles, 1/4 mile swim and 75 minutes on the bike.
