Thanks Jeff! I'm sure you'll look pretty cool wearing those things!

Those are good points Noel, no one in public should try to block out 100% of the noise, even on the bus you need to know a little bit of what is happening around you.

Most people try to block outside sounds with earbuds. Most earbuds don't really block any of the external sounds, so the volume must be turned way up to hear music or a book on tape. The solution is sound isolating headphones or earbuds. I have used Shure earbuds that are about as good as earplugs and sound better than most earbuds. I can set the volume almost to minimum, and it is still plenty loud. The other option is full over the ear headphones. Neither of these are safe for running when you need to hear cars, cyclists, and other runners.

Years ago (I have been told) the Air Force Academy banned walkman type headphones for this reason.

Count - that is a good point. I tend to keep my volume low-enough that I can hear my Garmin beeping at me throughout the run.

There is a definite down-side to using any type of mediaplayer on runs for those dependent on garmin-type gadgets. It is impossible to hear the beeps that tell you you are going too fast/slow. This a pity, as listening to a podcast/audiobook is excellent fun during long runs...

I feel sorry for all those people that play VERY LOUD music on the buss at seven in the morning...
