Acts 8:1 shows early Christians being persecuted:

On that day a great persecution broke out against the church at Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria.

I know that I often forget about persecution because oftentimes it doesn’t feel like I’m being persecuted or my life doesn’t lend itself to persecution. For most of us the most persecution we would feel is someone not talking to us or thinking we are weird. That is not the case for millions of our Christian brothers and sisters around the world.

One of the best organizations focusing on the persecuted church is Voice of the Martyrs. They have lots of different ways to get involved and to serve the persecuted church. One of the ways is to read the Persecution Blog.

So, what do you think? With God on our side like this, how can we lose? If God didn’t hesitate to put everything on the line for us, embracing our condition and exposing himself to the worst by sending his own Son, is there anything else he wouldn’t gladly and freely do for us? And who would dare tangle with God by messing with one of God’s chosen? Who would dare even to point a finger? The One who died for us—who was raised to life for us!—is in the presence of God at this very moment sticking up for us. Do you think anyone is going to be able to drive a wedge between us and Christ’s love for us? There is no way! Not trouble, not hard times, not hatred, not hunger, not homelessness, not bullying threats, not backstabbing, not even the worst sins listed in Scripture:

They kill us in cold blood because they hate you.
We’re sitting ducks; they pick us off one by one.
None of this fazes us because Jesus loves us. I’m absolutely convinced that nothing—nothing living or dead, angelic or demonic, today or tomorrow, high or low, thinkable or unthinkable—absolutely nothing can get between us and God’s love because of the way that Jesus our Master has embraced us. Romans 8:31-39

Perspectives 2008 is rapidly approaching! In less than 3 weeks Moms, Dads, Sisters, Brothers, Daughters, Sons, Aunts, Uncles, Grandpas, Grandmas, and maybe even some Great-Grandparents will begin experiencing the power and majesty of God in a new and different way as they explore Him through the framework of Perspectives on the World Christian Movement.

I recently came across this great podcast Missionary Talks, where David Peach interviews missionaries and they talk together about their experiences overseas.

Missionary Talks has a three-fold purpose. Primarily it will help young people, and those considering missions, realize that missionaries are normal people fulfilling God’s will in their lives. It will also be a help to those church members who support missionaries know better how to pray for the men and women on the field. Finally, it is to be an encouragement to other missionaries as they learn about other fields of service and how God is working around the world.

I have just started listening and it has become a great addition to my podcast list. Just over a year old, podcasts are uploaded weekly and can be listed to through any mp3 player or even straight from your computer!

He also has a little section about unreached people groups on the right side column.

In exactly four weeks fellow Christians will begin the 15 week journey to learn what God has done and is doing around the world!

You can get involved! Last week I challenged you to invite 5 people, have you done that? Here are some other ways to get involved:

  1. Tell 5 friends about the class and direct them to or to this blog for information. Online registration is available! Accompany them the first two nights! (Registration is also the first two nights.)
  2. Volunteer to help on Monday, January 7 & 14
    • to welcome and direct people
    • to help in registration
    • to provide and serve refreshments
  3. Be part of a ministry team on a scheduled basis throughout the semester to
    • lead in worship (2-3 songs per night)
    • set up, serve, clean up refreshments (We ALL know how important this is in the evening!!!)
    • for those GOD is calling to hear and obey
    • for the Task Force to plan & prepare thoroughly, led by the Spirit
    • for speakers to be healthy, to prepare and to be anointed as they speak
    • for the host church tech people and equipment to be flexible & work seamlessly
    • for good weather and traffic every Monday night
    • pray that the enemy will be thwarted in his attempts to discourage, confuse and disrupt

I assume that most people who are looking at this blog right now are Perspectives alumni. So I challenge each of you to invite 5 people to learn more about Perspectives. It is probably safe to assume that we all know 5 people whose life could be turned upside down or maybe even sideways by this course.

We who have completed it, know the value it has had for us. It is that story that could encourage others to follow our lead. I know that it provided great fodder for discussion between my wife and I, helping us grow closer to each other and gaining a better perspective on the future God has in store for us.

Having seen some of the planning process, I now understand why the course is $200 per person. The planning committee is challenged with bringing the best and most dynamic speakers, while providing the course at the lowest possible cost per person. This year’s lineup looks amazing and the $200 cost is a bargain (remember it is only $13 a week and includes the books!). This can become quite costly for a couple who wants to attend together. Did you know that its possible to provide scholarships for people who don’t have other resources but want to attend. This is where you can step in! We as alumni and friends can provide scholarships for others to attend at reduced cost! Please contact Diane if you are interested in giving the gift of Perspectives!

  • Course for Credit $450 (credits through Trinity International University)

This year’s fee structure is a little different. This price includes all of your materials and there is no discount for large groups. We have decided to offer the absolute lowest price for all students. Be sure to check with your church or current employer about having them sponsor you or sponsoring the Perspectives class in general.
