How To: Facebook & Fan Page Status Updates

Facebook has gotten plenty of negative feedback for their redesign. That isn’t the purpose of this post, but Facebook should make it easier to figure out how to do things. They touted the live news feed and how organization that use Fan Pages are really going to have to step it up in this new revamped site.
After some investigation and thanks to a Twitter comment I have figured out why not everyone sees Fan Page status updates in their news feeds.
It appears that unless you became a Fan after the redesign then you need to manually change some settings to “unhide” the status updates in your live feed. You can always hide it again later if they constantly update their status. My source for this information is Julie Bailey.
If you don’t see the fan page status updates in your news feed then here is what you do.
1) Click on the “home” tab.
2) Scroll to the bottom
3) Click on “Edit Options”
4) Next to all of the Pages is a button that says “Add to News Feed”
Then you should start seeing them!
Julie also indicated that Selective Twitter Status (my choice for integrating Facebook and Twitter) is now working for Fan Pages as well. I’ve tested it out for the Seward Church Twitter and Facebook fan page and it seems to work well.
Updated: For those struggling to find the “Edit Options” link here is a picture of what the very bottom of my Facebook News Feed Page looks like. You might need to click on it to get a clearer image.

Thanks for this post, this is great! One big question I have is how do you easily disseminate this information to your fans? I guess sending an update to everyone?
Thomas – I’m glad you found this helpful. Yes, hopefully sending an update to your current fans will work. You could also right a note on the fan page about it and depending on your communication strategies it might be worth an blog post, e-mail, or tweet.
Where exactly do I find the “Edit Options”? Thank you!
The “edit options” tag is at the very bottom on the right side of the blue bar. At the bottom of your News Feed. Does that help? Make sure that you’ve clicked on the “home” button first.
i can’t seem to locate the “edit options” link.. yes, i already highlighted the filter in the left-hand panel that says “News Feed” and scrolled to the bottom. but no “edit options”.
I updated the post with a picture of where my edit options link is. If it isn’t there on your news feed then I’m not sure what to tell you. Good luck!
Thank you!! This finally answered a questions I’ve been struggling with for weeks.
Glad to help!
Just a comment to help any one who is NOT seeing the “edit options” button. As long as all of your fan pages ARE currently going into your news feed, you will not see the “edit options.”
It’s only if you are a fan of something (and I also suppose friend of someone) who is currently set to be “hide” in your newsfeed.
I moderate the fanpage for The Old Schoolhouse Magazine. We have over 11,000 fans and have been struggling with this since we were at about 8500 fans but I had no clue as to why. I have spent hours trying to figure this out. Thank you so much! So MUCH! I am just thrilled to have this information. Really, you cannot know how excited I am for this. Now to get the information to our fans…
Really, thank you so much again! I can’t thank you enough.

I found the “edit option” and friends I have hided, but I could not find SOME of my joined fans list.
I can’t find any of my pages on it for some reason..
I made a video today illustrating three possible reasons why your Fan Page info may not be displaying on facebook user’s home pages.
A lot of the info above is correct, but you have to make sure you are looking at live feed.

Anyone find fan page updates still not registering in the Live News Feed?
I don’t get this on Facebook?!! You become a fan to get the updates right? why wouldn’t the updates post on the newsfeed? It’s crazy!! I’ve just recently started a facebook fans of page for our local country club. I’m the webmaster for the website. I thought that by setting up a facebook page, we could get our members daily updates on happenings at the club. That’s what they would expect to see as a fan of their country club! I really appreciate this fix above. I’m going to set it up this evening. (I’m on facebook and am not getting the updates for the country club either so I’ll do this fix on my personal facebook page to test it out). Thanks for the info. I’ve been pulling my hair out for 2 days on this and fans to the country club page are asking “where’s the updates?”
Facebook continues to make changes to their News Feed and how fan page updates are processed. It is important to remember 2 things:
Engagement is key. The more people who interact with your fan page the more likely it will be to show up in any one person’s news feed.
The more any 1 person engages in your page the more likely that update will hit their news feed.
So it is more important than ever to have relevant and engaging status updates! The average person’s News Feed refreshes in 10 minutes.
I have few fan pages. Only one feed is working. Other fan pages do not “update” feed for fans. I tried to do changes for my own feed (there is no hidden feeds) without result. Is there anyting to do?
OK, lets update. Feed is working fine. BUT, if i add link to my fan page post, its not working.
My feed is not working either. I’ve tried to go to the edit option for setting up as you suggested but There is ne “Add to News Feed” button on the pop up when I clicked the edit button. I really do not what to do. Any suggestions or help?
Is there any way to have live news feeds come down my Facebook fan page from external sites and other Facebook pages, the way it comes down on my Facebook home page?
I am wondering how you can have the same NEWS FEEDS come down my fan page, as comes down my HOME PAGE. Is this even possible? Thanks
ack. I have done this so many times (edit options.. add to news feed, save..) and it still does not work.
I rather see updates from the pages i am a fan of, or like, than my own friends.. After I save I go back and everything I checked to show more.. is gone again, and I start the entire process over.. this is frustrating. I know its just facebook, but I love seeing updates from places and people I am a fan of.
Thank you so much for this. it really helped. but is there a way for me to know if all my fans are seeing my updates or not? because this set up is only for me and I want ALL of my fans to be able to see the pages updates in their newsfeed.
Thank you a lot for this tho.
I can easily find my “edit options” link but once open, there is not an option to add a fan page. I’m a personal fan of my business fan page and it’s not even listed there. The only list is of the pages I’ve chosen, in the past, to hide from my feed.
To me, unless people can see my updates, having a fan page is useless.
Mel, a lot has changed since I wrote this post. One thing you could try in the “edit options” tab is to change the number of friends to 5000, this will basically show all of your friends.
One of the things Facebook has done is to create a logarithm that basically shows the friends, pages, etc that you interact with. So the more you interact with a person or page the more likely that friend’s or page’s updates will appear in your news feed.
Does that make sense? If you want to use Facebook as a medium to interact with customers, you need to give them a reason to keep coming to your page.
hi,
maybe you can help. I struggling trying to solve the problem you described. My problem is that through my orgs fan page, i cant see the news feed of the pages we have liked. I cant see anything. All i see is a banner asking me to add contacts to my list of friends. please help.
I have tried this and it briefly displays “loading” and nothing happens. Same as when I go to the upper left news feed/edit. It displays “loading” for a brief period. I can’t edit any pages that I have hidden. Very frustrating for a business page.
Facebook recently added the ability for users to edit ‘Status Updates’—having long since had the facility for ‘comments’ (and only ‘comments’) to be edited.
But ‘fan page’ managers still can’t edit their ‘status updates’. If there’s a mistake/typo, the only solutions are to delete and repost, or live with it.
Not very good, IMAO.
